Defining Cage-Free

Eggs from birds raised without battery cages. While they can walk around an indoor barn, they do not necessarily have access to the outdoors.

‘Cage-free’ indicates that hens are not kept in traditional battery cages. They have the freedom to walk, spread their wings, and lay eggs in nests within an indoor barn setting.

However, it is important to note that ‘cage-free’ does not guarantee the birds have access to the outdoors or sunlight. While it is an improvement over battery cages, welfare standards can still vary widely between facilities.
