Complete Protein

What Makes a Protein ‘Complete’?

A protein source that contains adequate proportions of all nine essential amino acids necessary for the human body. Eggs are a classic complete protein, as are soy, quinoa, and buckwheat.

Proteins are made up of amino acids, and ‘complete’ proteins contain all nine essential amino acids in adequate amounts. These are the building blocks our bodies cannot produce themselves.

While most animal products are complete proteins, many plant foods are missing one or more essential amino acids. Eggs are considered a gold standard of high-quality, complete protein, making them a useful addition to a plant-focused diet.
